Germany Student Visa from Egypt: TLScontact Cairo, Blocked Account & Timeline (2026)

  • Updated June 2026
  • For applicants from Egypt

Egyptian students applying for a German national (study) visa go through a different front door than most other corridors: TLScontact Cairo handles intake, not the German Embassy directly, and Egyptian academic documents need a specific pre-authentication step most guides skip over.

Where you actually apply

Applications are submitted through TLScontact, which operates visa application centres in New Cairo, El-Sheikh Zayed, Alexandria, and Hurghada. TLScontact staff check your file is complete, not whether you’re eligible — eligibility is assessed separately by the Embassy after your documents are forwarded. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your slot; TLScontact collects fingerprints and the visa fee, and charges its own service fee on top of the German visa fee.

The blocked account: the number that matters most

As of 2026, the standard proof-of-funds requirement is €11,904 for the year (€992/month), held in a blocked account (Sperrkonto) with a German-recognized provider. If you hold a scholarship worth less than €992/month, you only need to block the shortfall, not the full amount.

Two timing details Egyptian applicants consistently underestimate:

  1. Open the account 3+ weeks before your appointment. International transfers into German blocked- account providers can take up to 10 business days to clear, and you need the official blocking confirmation document in hand — not just a transfer receipt — before TLScontact will accept your file.
  2. Only the provider’s formal blocking confirmation counts. A bank statement or wire confirmation alone is not accepted as proof.

Document authentication — the step unique to Egypt

Egyptian academic documents (degree certificates, transcripts) cannot go straight from Arabic-to-German translation to the embassy. They need pre-authentication by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs before the German Embassy/TLScontact will accept the subsequent German legalization. Arabic documents also require translation by a sworn translator on the Embassy’s approved list — a translation from an unlisted translator will be rejected regardless of quality. Budget 3–4 weeks for this authentication-and-translation chain alone, separate from visa processing time.

Full document checklist

  • Signed national visa application form
  • Valid passport with at least 2 blank pages, valid 6+ months beyond your intended stay
  • Two biometric photos
  • University admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid) from the German institution
  • Blocked account confirmation (or scholarship/sponsorship equivalent)
  • Health insurance proof valid for the full stay
  • Authenticated and translated academic certificates/transcripts (see above)
  • Motivation letter and CV
  • German language proof, where your program requires it (many English-taught master’s programs don’t)

Processing time and when to apply

Typical processing is 6 to 8 weeks, with real risk of extended delays during the July–September peak season when every northern-hemisphere intake converges on German missions at once. Work backward from your intended arrival: for an October semester start, plan to submit your TLScontact application in July at the latest, and have your blocked account and document authentication already underway before that.

Corridor-specific refusal patterns

  • Incomplete authentication chain: documents translated before Ministry of Foreign Affairs pre-authentication are a frequent reason for a returned (not refused, but stalled) file.
  • Blocked account timing mismatches: a blocking confirmation dated after the TLScontact appointment slot, or one that doesn’t cover the full intended stay, routinely causes delays.
  • Admission letter conditions not yet met: conditional admission letters (pending a language test or document) need the condition resolved before the visa file is considered complete.
