US B-1/B-2 Tourist Visa Interview Questions & Answers

The B-1/B-2 interview turns on Section 214(b): the officer assumes you intend to immigrate unless you prove strong ties to home. Keep answers short, be specific about your trip, and make your reason to return obvious.

  1. Q1What is the purpose of your trip?

State it plainly — tourism, visiting family, a specific event — with dates. Vague or shifting purposes raise doubt.

Have an itinerary or invitation that matches what you say.

  2. Q2How long will you stay?

Give an exact duration that fits your purpose and your obligations back home. It must match your application.

Shorter, well-justified trips are easier to approve.

  3. Q3Who is paying for your trip?

If self-funded, show income and savings. If someone sponsors you, explain who and why, with supporting documents.

Be able to prove the funds, not just claim them.

  4. Q4What do you do for work?

Describe your job, employer and how long you've worked there. Stable employment is powerful evidence you'll return.

Bring a leave-approval letter from your employer if you can.

  5. Q5Do you have family in the United States?

Answer truthfully and emphasise your ties at home — job, property, dependents — that ensure your return.

Relatives in the US are fine; weak home ties are the real risk.

  6. Q6Have you travelled abroad before?

Mention prior travel and that you respected every visa's terms. A clean history builds trust.

Highlight any past returns from countries with strict immigration rules.

Sample answers are for preparation only — always answer truthfully and in your own words.
