A working holiday visa lets you live and work abroad temporarily, usually while traveling — but the age limits, process (lottery vs. first-come), and total eligible stay vary enough between countries that the “best” option really depends on your nationality and age. Here’s how the major schemes compare for 2026.

Australia (subclass 417 / 462)

Australia’s standard age range is 18-30, but nationals of a specific list of countries — including Canada, France, Ireland, and the UK among others — qualify for the extended 18-35 range. A significant procedural change took effect 1 July 2026: your eligibility age is now assessed at the moment you apply, rather than at a later stage, so applicants close to their cutoff birthday should apply well before it rather than assuming a grace period.

United Kingdom (Youth Mobility Scheme)

The UK’s standard age limit is under 31 at the date of application. A smaller group of nationalities — reported as including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, with some sources also naming Japan or South Korea as a fourth (confirm the current exact list on gov.uk, since recent reporting disagrees) — can apply up to age 35, and those nationalities also receive a longer total stay of up to 3 years rather than the standard 2. Nationals of Hong Kong and Taiwan must first be selected in a ballot before they’re eligible to apply at all, adding a lottery element on top of the age criteria.

Canada (International Experience Class)

Canada’s IEC program runs on bilateral agreements with roughly 36 countries, each carrying its own age limit — commonly either 18-30 or 18-35 depending on the specific agreement with your country. Because demand usually exceeds the available spots, Canada allocates most pools through a lottery: having a profile in the pool doesn’t guarantee a draw, and applicants who aren’t selected in one season generally need to create a fresh profile for the next season rather than carrying over automatically.

New Zealand

New Zealand’s standard limit is 18-30, with an extended 18-35 range reported for nationals of a smaller group including the UK, Canada, and France. As with the other schemes, confirm your nationality’s specific limit on Immigration New Zealand’s own site, since the extended-age list differs from Australia’s and the UK’s lists.

Ireland

Ireland runs working holiday arrangements through bilateral agreements with a more limited set of countries than Australia, Canada, or New Zealand, and its own age rules vary by partner country rather than following one blanket policy. If Ireland is on your shortlist, check the specific bilateral agreement your country holds with Ireland rather than assuming a standard 18-30 or 18-35 range applies.

Quick comparison

Country Standard age range Extended range (where it applies) Allocation method
Australia 18-30 18-35 for select nationalities First-come (age checked at application)
UK 18-30 18-35 for select nationalities (longer stay too) First-come, except ballot for some nationalities
Canada 18-30 or 18-35 by country agreement — Lottery pool
New Zealand 18-30 18-35 for select nationalities First-come
Ireland Varies by bilateral agreement Varies by bilateral agreement Varies

How to choose

If your nationality qualifies for an extended age range on more than one of these, prioritize applying to the scheme with a first-come, first-served process over a lottery one, since you control your own timing rather than depending on a draw. If you’re already past 30, check the specific extended-age lists for Australia, the UK, and New Zealand carefully — eligibility by nationality is the single biggest variable here, more than any other factor in this comparison.
