If your flight itinerary routes through a UK airport — commonly Heathrow, Gatwick, or Manchester — on the way to a different destination, and your passport is on the UK’s “visa national” list, you may need a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) even if you never intend to leave the airport or pass through UK border control. This catches travellers off guard because it feels unintuitive to need a visa for a country you’re not actually visiting — but the UK treats transiting its airspace and airports as requiring authorisation for nationals from a defined list of countries.
Who actually needs a DATV
You generally need a DATV if, all of the following apply:
- Your passport nationality is on the UK’s visa national list for transit purposes — this includes passport holders from a long list of countries including Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Vietnam, among many others.
- You’re changing flights at a UK airport and will remain in the airside (secure) area the entire time, never crossing UK border control.
- You don’t already hold an exempting document (see below).
Being a visa national doesn’t automatically mean you need a DATV — not every visa national nationality requires one for pure airside transit; the DATV list is a specific subset. Always check the current, nationality-specific requirement on GOV.UK before booking rather than assuming based on general visa-national status.
Who’s exempt
You generally don’t need a DATV if you hold any of the following:
- A valid UK Standard Visitor visa or Marriage Visitor visa.
- A UK electronic travel authorisation (ETA), where applicable to your nationality and route.
- An EU Settlement Scheme family permit or Home Office travel document.
- Certain EEA-issued residence documents or the UK/Ireland biometric visa scheme documents available to some nationalities.
Confirm your airline’s view too — airlines check transit documentation at check-in and can deny boarding if they believe you lack the right paperwork, independent of what you’ve read online.
Fee and how to apply
- DATV fee: £41.50, effective from the Home Office’s April 2026 fee update (up from £39 previously). Fees are reviewed periodically — confirm the current rate using the Home Office’s online fee checker for your nationality and country of application before paying.
- Visitor in Transit visa (if you need to leave the airside area): £74.50 — a different, more expensive product, required if you’ll clear border control, collect luggage, or need to switch terminals through the public area.
- Apply online through the standard UK visa application portal, specifying “Direct Airside Transit Visa” as your route, with your flight itinerary showing both legs and total layover time.
- Processing: Apply well before travel — DATV applications go through the same visa application centre network as other UK visit visas, and processing can take several weeks depending on your country, so this is not a last-minute document.
Common mistakes
- Assuming an ETA covers DATV nationals. ETAs and DATVs serve different nationality groups and purposes — holding an ETA for a different nationality tier doesn’t substitute for a required DATV.
- Booking a layover that requires leaving airside (e.g., a terminal change via the public area) while only holding a DATV, not a Visitor in Transit visa.
- Leaving it too late. Because DATV applications route through standard visa processing, booking a transit-only layover a week before travel and assuming same-day approval is a common and avoidable error.
