US F-1 Student Visa Document Checklist
The F-1 interview is brief, so your documents must instantly support your story. Assemble these before your appointment and keep them organised so you can produce any item without fumbling.
Application and identity
- Form I-20 signed by you and your school
- DS-160 confirmation pageWith the barcode the consulate will scan.
- Passport valid 6 months beyond your stay
- Visa appointment and SEVIS fee receipts
- One passport photoMeeting the US 2x2 inch specification.
Financial evidence
- Bank statements covering tuition and living costs
- Affidavit of supportIf a sponsor is funding you, with their proof of funds.
- Scholarship or assistantship lettersIf applicable.
Academic and ties documents
- Transcripts and diplomas
- Standardised test scoresTOEFL, IELTS, GRE or GMAT as required.
- Evidence of ties to your home countryFamily, property or career plans showing you'll return.
Tips
- Make sure the funding amount you show matches the figure on your I-20.
- Bring originals plus a copy of each document.
- Practise explaining your funding and post-study plans out loud before the interview.
